Anthropic Launches Claude Duet to Target Small Business Automation

The new AI agent distinguishes itself from personal assistants by focusing on professional workflows and background task management for Pro and Max subscribers.

The competitive landscape for artificial intelligence is currently saturated with new productivity tools, yet Anthropic is pushing into the fray with a distinct strategic pivot. On October 22, the company unveiled Claude Duet, an application designed specifically to challenge established players like Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. Rather than aiming for the casual consumer market, this new entrant seeks to capture the attention of professionals and small business owners who require robust task automation.

Anthropic is making a deliberate effort to separate Duet from the personal assistant models that dominate the current market. The company clarified that Duet is not intended for handling simple errands, such as booking tickets, nor does it offer a live view of its browser interactions. Instead, the agent focuses on generating daily briefings, constructing custom dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on existing user data. It operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete tasks in the background while the user attends to other duties, only surfacing to the user when specific approval is needed.

This launch coincides with a broader industry shift from simple conversational assistants to autonomous agents capable of executing work on a user's behalf. While Meta’s Muse remains primarily a personal tool, the company has introduced a small-business variant that connects with external applications. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots leans into business utility through integrations with professional software. Anthropic appears to be betting that a dedicated professional agent will outperform these hybrid approaches.

The technical foundation of Duet relies on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which provides access to a marketplace containing over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins. A notable feature is its ability to execute online purchases using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, the company has set boundaries on this autonomy; sensitive financial steps require explicit user consent, and the agent is barred from trading securities or transferring funds between accounts.

Concerns regarding data privacy are addressed through a newly released classifier that scans every message to prevent sensitive information leaks. By default, the system is programmed to reject requests for credit card numbers or government identification documents. This security layer is critical as the agent gains access to deeper levels of user data to perform its professional duties.

Claude Duet is currently available in a research preview stage. It can be accessed via iOS and Android applications, or through the web interface at Claude.ai. Access is restricted to Pro and Max customers who must join a waitlist to trial the service, suggesting Anthropic is testing its market fit before a wider rollout.
