Top-ranked Miami enters its weekend contest against No. 4 Notre Dame with a critical question regarding its offensive core. Star wide receiver Malachi Toney sustained an ankle injury during Wednesday's practice session, a development that has introduced uncertainty into the Hurricanes' preparation.
The Miami athletic department confirmed the situation in a statement, noting that Toney is undergoing further evaluation by the medical staff. The announcement did not specify a timeline for his return or confirm his availability for the upcoming game. Toney has managed ankle issues earlier this season without missing any of Miami's eight games.
Toney's potential absence would significantly impact a Miami offense that currently leads the nation in several categories. He ranks second in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 73 receptions and is tied for second with 13 touchdown catches. His 1,027 receiving yards place him third nationally. Toney accounts for 35% of Miami's total receptions, 39% of its receiving yards, and 46% of its touchdown passes this season.
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman praised Toney earlier in the week, stating, "He's as good as anyone you'll see." The Irish defense is ranked first in the country, making Toney's status a key factor in a matchup that was expected to feature his direct contest with Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore.
Toney has not missed a game in his two years at Miami, playing in all 24 of the Hurricanes' contests since enrolling. He holds the school record for single-game receiving yards with 234, set during the season opener at Stanford. He also recorded 16 receptions against Pitt last month, setting a new single-game record for the program.
His career statistics place him near several historical marks. Toney has 18 fewer receptions than the Miami all-time record of 200 held by Xavier Restrepo. He is also three touchdowns short of Michael Irvin's school record, which stands at 26. Toney currently ranks sixth on the all-time list for receiving yards with 2,238.
This game serves as a rematch of the first-week contest from the previous season, a victory that secured Miami a spot in the College Football Playoff while eliminating Notre Dame. The Hurricanes remain undefeated at 8-0, while Notre Dame holds a 7-1 record.
