Diesel Makanikaiaulu Kawelo faced a $500,000 bail amount after police charged him with kidnapping on Wednesday. The 23-year-old man was identified as the suspect in an attempted abduction that took place in Honolulu earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at the Kainalu condominiums. Surveillance footage from the site shows a truck parked outside the complex. The video captures the suspect entering the garage area and confronting two women. He is seen chasing one of them through the space.
A 77-year-old resident, who requested anonymity, provided details about the physical struggle. She stated that the suspect elbowed her in the face to push her away. He then lifted her 24-year-old friend into his arms.
“He shoved me away from my friend and he picked her up,” the resident said. “He looked like a monster. He just had so much hatred and craziness in his eyes.”
Beverly Louis, a neighbor who witnessed the event, described seeing the man bear-hug the woman and drag her toward the rear of his vehicle. Louis shouted for him to release her. Mike Finkelstein, another witness, also yelled from his apartment that he had called police and was coming down to confront the suspect.
Several neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion. They helped the 24-year-old woman break free from the suspect's grip. Witnesses reported that the man fled in his truck. Police located him a few hours later in a nearby neighborhood where he was running naked.
The 77-year-old woman and her friend reported continuing to have nightmares in the days following the incident. The neighborhood remains on edge as residents process the event.
