The Indian stock market welcomed Jio Platforms with a surge that has altered the corporate hierarchy in the country. The company, a major provider of digital services and telecommunications, began trading at a premium that pushed its valuation past the $137 billion mark. This financial milestone positions the Ambani family as the owners of the two most valuable firms in India.

Shares of Jio Platforms opened 3.3% higher on Thursday, following a Wednesday debut where the stock priced above 25% above its initial offering rate. The initial listing established a market capitalization of 13.05 trillion rupees, equivalent to $137.1 billion. Reliance Industries, the parent entity controlled by Mukesh Ambani, retains ownership of more than 64% of Jio Platforms after the sale of shares to the public.

Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire head of the Reliance group, was visibly emotional during the pre-listing ceremony on Wednesday. He watched as his three children recounted the history of building the company and committed to generating value for shareholders over the coming half-century. Akash Ambani, the 35-year-old managing director of Jio Platforms, outlined plans to expand into artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and satellite connectivity within the next decade.

Financial analysts point to the company's ability to manage debt as a primary driver of its market appeal. Anurag Singh, founder of Ansid Capital, noted that Jio repaid nearly 300 billion rupees in legacy telecommunications debt while diluting existing ownership by only 3%. This efficiency has placed the company's market value in the same range as major U.S. carriers, specifically AT&T at $139 billion and Verizon at $179 billion, according to LSEG data.

Investors are scrutinizing the sustainability of the current price levels. Vaqarjaved Khan, a senior analyst at Angel One, observed that Jio operates with a 52% margin and a customer base exceeding 500 million people. However, he warned that the current price-to-earnings ratio of 34 times suggests that much of the company's operational quality is already factored into the share price. Future financial gains will likely rely on increases in revenue per user and the success of its new AI services.

The successful listing has also intensified the competition between India's largest business houses. A report by Bloomberg indicates that the Reliance Group's total market value has reached 30 trillion rupees. This figure now exceeds the 25 trillion rupee valuation of the Tata Group, establishing the Ambani family business as the largest conglomerate in the nation.
