The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time in franchise history after beating the Rays, and the 2026-27 offseason is now officially underway. The Rays will try to win their first title next year. Several major dates and deadlines are close, though a labor dispute could disrupt much of what follows.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, and owners are expected to lock out the players until a new deal is reached. That could last days, weeks or months, and it might affect spring training or even the 2027 regular season, unless the sides find labor peace before spring. Free agency will still open in early November, but all transactions stop once a lockout starts.

On Oct. 29, as of 9 a.m. ET, players with at least six years of service time become free agents, and trades involving 40-man roster players resume for the first time since the summer deadline. For the first five days, free agents can negotiate only with their most recent team. Few re-sign in that window, and Edwin Díaz's return to the Mets four years ago is the most notable recent case.

Several events cluster around Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. Gold Glove winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 1 during an ESPN broadcast, with the Cubs and Blue Jays each having five finalists. Most contract option decisions are due Nov. 2, including Michael King's opt-out with the Padres, Bo Bichette's opt-out with the Mets, and the Orioles' $20 million club option on Luis Robert Jr. The same day is the deadline to make a qualifying offer, a one-year deal worth $23.15 million according to the New York Post. Randy Arozarena is eligible to receive one from the Mariners, but Tarik Skubal is not, because he was traded during the season. Free agency formally opens at 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 2.

Awards week runs Nov. 9 to 12 on MLB Network at 7 p.m. ET each day: Rookies of the Year, Managers of the Year, Cy Youngs and then MVPs. The GM Meetings take place Nov. 10 to 12 in Las Vegas, where groundwork is often laid for later deals.

November 17 is a busy date. Silver Slugger winners are announced, and free agents must accept or reject qualifying offers by 4 p.m. ET. Players who reject the offer carry draft pick compensation, and Arozarena and Seiya Suzuki are expected to turn it down. Teams must also file reserve lists by 6 p.m. ET to protect minor leaguers from the Rule 5 Draft, with Dodgers righty Christian Zazueta and Nationals righty Travis Sykora among the notable prospects. Owners meet in New York from Nov. 17 to 19, likely as a final strategy session before the CBA expires. The non-tender deadline follows on Nov. 20.

The CBA expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, and a new agreement before then would be a major surprise. A lockout would freeze trades, signings and negotiations involving 40-man roster players. The Hall of Fame's Classic Baseball Committee results on Dec. 6 are unaffected and will be announced as scheduled.

Other events are subject to change. These include the Winter Meetings in San Diego from Dec. 7 to 9, the Dec. 8 draft lottery, the Dec. 9 Rule 5 Draft and the Jan. 8 arbitration filing deadline. The Winter Meetings and the Rule 5 Draft were canceled during the last lockout. The international signing period, set to open Jan. 15, went ahead as scheduled then. The 2027 Hall of Fame class is set to be announced Jan. 19.
