Macomb County residents have several options for a free Thanksgiving meal this year.
Local churches and nonprofit organizations are preparing to serve food and distribute holiday items to residents who may lack the funds for a traditional dinner.
St. Peter Catholic Church in Mount Clemens began its annual turkey drive more than a decade ago. The parish collects donations over two weekends before distributing the birds. Jim Buckman, president of the St. Vincent de Paul society at the church, said the group typically gives out 525 turkeys. Last year, that number rose to 722.
Buckman said the distribution on Nov. 19 will focus on families who already use the parish food bank. The group also shares about 20 turkeys with other local organizations, including the Capuchins and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 154. He noted that some families are surprised to receive a full holiday meal. "Some people even cry when they call us," Buckman said. "We give them so much because they weren't expecting to have a big meal for their family."
The Salvation Army will host a community dinner in Mount Clemens on Nov. 25. Major Barbara Owen, corps officer for the local unit, said the event runs from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Church Street location. No registration is required. Guests will sit at decorated tables and be served by volunteers rather than waiting in a line. The menu includes turkey, dressing, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and pie.
Woodside Bible Church is distributing Thanksgiving food boxes through campuses in Warren and Chesterfield. Interested residents can find registration details and specific distribution times at woodsidebible.org/thanksgiving-boxes.
Detroit Thanksgiving, an initiative of Hungry for a Day, aims to feed 2,000 families across metro Detroit. The group plans distributions in Detroit, Warren, and Harrison Township. A $40 donation covers a meal for a family of four. More information is available at detroitthanksgiving.com.
