Tamarius Davis will spend the next five decades in a Florida state prison.

The 27-year-old received his sentence from Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Laura Stuzin on Thursday. The ruling follows a second-degree murder conviction for the 2021 death of Dustin Wakefield. Davis was with the victim, his wife, and their young son on South Beach in 2021. Davis pointed a gun at the baby during the incident. Wakefield stepped in front of the weapon and was shot five times.

Stuzin described the case as one of the most difficult she has considered. She announced a total of 50 years in state prison and 25 years of probation. The judge specified that the sentence for the first count includes a 25-year minimum mandatory period. The second count carries a 30-year prison term with a 20-year minimum mandatory. The third count involves five years of state prison. Stuzin ordered that all sentences be served concurrently.

The prosecution sought a life sentence for Davis. The defense team argued for a maximum of 25 years. The final ruling fell between those two positions. Davis is scheduled to serve his time at Florida State Prison. He will also receive credits for time already served.

Davis’ attorney plans to address the media later on Thursday. The sentencing concluded after days of emotional testimony from the victim’s family. The court session took place in Miami.
