Russia Ordered to Pay 1.6 Million for Sunflower Seeds Lost in Occupied Svatove

A court has ordered Russia to pay 1.6 million for sunflower seeds lost in occupied Svatove. This ruling came after a private company, Oliiar, lost a stock of sunflower seeds when its storage facility in Svatove was taken over by Russian forces. The information about the ruling comes directly from the court's decision.

The case dates back to October 2021, when Oliiar agreed to buy 4,700 tonnes of sunflower seeds from another company. The seeds were stored in a facility in Svatove, but by February 2022, Russian forces had seized the warehouse. Oliiar never recovered the remaining 2,107 tonnes of seeds.

The court found that Oliiar had provided strong evidence that the loss of the crop was due to Russia's armed aggression. It ruled that Russia, represented by its Ministry of Justice, must pay 65.36 million as compensation. This figure was based on an expert valuation of the lost seeds.

The company, Oliiar, is based in Pustomyty, in Lviv Oblast. Iryna Zalizna is listed as its founder, and Iryna Podoba as its director. This ruling follows a similar decision by the same court, which earlier ordered Russia to pay 51.67 million for property lost in Svatove and Kakhovka.

The court's decision reflects a growing pattern of rulings that hold Russia accountable for the destruction of Ukrainian property. These rulings are based on evidence and expert valuations, showing that the court is taking the losses of Ukrainian companies seriously.

The case highlights the impact of Russia's occupation on Ukrainian businesses, as private companies continue to suffer from the loss of goods and property. The court's rulings provide a measure of justice for these businesses, but the damage caused by the invasion remains significant.

As the legal process continues, it is expected that Russia will face more financial consequences for its actions in Ukraine. The court's decisions are a sign that Ukrainian businesses are seeking and receiving compensation for their losses.
