Forty-year-old Vincent Kompany is currently hospitalized, with medical staff indicating he will be absent for a significant duration as he recovers from a severe viral infection. The Bayern Munich head coach collapsed on the training pitch on Friday, an incident that prompted immediate medical attention and a shift in the club's leadership structure for the coming days.

Max Eberl, the club's director of sport, addressed reporters on Saturday to provide an update on the manager's condition. He confirmed that Kompany remains in a stable state but that examinations are still ongoing to determine the specific nature of the illness. Eberl emphasized that the club is not rushing the process and has not established a fixed timeline for the coach's return to the dugout.

The sporting director stated that the priority is understanding the underlying cause of the problem before discussing recovery milestones. He made it clear that the absence should be measured in weeks rather than days, signaling a prolonged period of uncertainty for the team's leadership. Eberl noted that the club will give Kompany all the time he requires to heal without pressure.

Aaron Danks, the English assistant coach, led the news conference in place of his superior. Danks revealed that he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday, focusing solely on the former Manchester City captain's well-being rather than tactical matters. He described the conversation as a simple check-in to ensure his colleague was comfortable and healthy.

Danks explained that he told Kompany there would be no discussion about football during that call. He added that all operational decisions regarding the team are now in the hands of the coaching staff, who will work collectively to maintain the club's momentum. The assistant coach stressed the importance of unity and forward progress during this transitional period.

Following Kompany's collapse on Friday, the club postponed a match involving its second team. However, Eberl indicated that they did not seek a delay for the Bundesliga fixture scheduled for Sunday at Freiburg. He argued that the most effective way to support Kompany's recovery would be for the first team to deliver a strong performance and ideally secure a positive result on the pitch.

The director of sport suggested that a successful match day would serve as a significant morale booster for the recovering manager. He viewed a strong showing by the players as a direct contribution to Kompany's healing process. The club's strategy is to let the team's effort on the field provide the necessary support during the coach's absence.

Danks also confirmed that Joshua Kimmich, the Germany national team captain, will miss the upcoming game against Freiburg. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday, and his absence adds another layer of challenge for the squad. The team will need to adapt to the loss of a key veteran player while also navigating the leadership vacuum created by the head coach's hospitalization.

Kompany had returned to the sideline for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press conference due to his illness. After that match, he admitted to ignoring early warning signs from his body. He described catching a nasty virus the previous week and failing to listen to his physical limits, leading to a point where his body forced a halt to his activities.

Bayern Munich enters Sunday's match as the defending champions and current leaders of the Bundesliga table. They hold a one-point advantage over Freiburg, their next opponents. The team's next major fixture after the league game is a Champions League match scheduled for November 3 in Madrid against Atletico, highlighting the tight schedule the coaching staff must manage during Kompany's recovery.
