Anthropic possesses a cash reserve that exceeds that of nearly every non-bank United States corporation. The company filed documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday revealing its financial position as of June 30. It reported holding $112.4 billion in cash alongside $19.3 billion in short-term investments. This total sum of $131.7 billion places the firm ahead of major industry players.

Data compiled by CNBC and S&P Capital IQ shows that Anthropic outpaces Amazon, SpaceX, Meta, and Microsoft in liquidity. The company also holds more cash than Nvidia and Apple combined. Only Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet maintain larger cash positions among non-bank U.S. companies. The AI lab was founded six years ago and has raised $141 billion in private financing during that period.

The company is preparing for an initial public offering with reports indicating a potential raise of over $100 billion. If this projection holds, Anthropic's cash holdings could exceed $230 billion. Existing investors plan to sell shares in the offering, meaning the company will not retain the entire amount raised. Specific details regarding the offering size are expected to be disclosed in approximately two weeks.

This level of liquidity represents a historical first for a company entering public markets. Despite this financial strength, Anthropic faces substantial future obligations related to computing power. The company recorded compute and infrastructure expenses of $8.95 billion for the first half of the year. However, management noted that it typically purchases computing capacity 12 to 18 months in advance. Expenses are only recognized when that capacity becomes available, meaning current figures do not reflect total future costs.

As of June 30, the company disclosed $321.4 billion in estimated future undiscounted lease obligations. It also listed $265.6 billion in expected future fixed or minimum-guaranteed commitments. These obligations total more than $587 billion and span terms from one year to 20 years. All of these costs will commence within the next few years. The company stated that it must continue generating profits or raising capital to fulfill these duties.

Following the June 30 filing date, Anthropic entered into new and amended agreements. These contracts carry a minimum future payment obligation of approximately $245 billion. The company has not yet disclosed the aggregate amount of its current total commitments. The scale of these infrastructure deals dwarfs its current cash reserves, requiring continuous capital accumulation to meet contractual requirements.
