US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelled the official group photograph scheduled for Friday morning at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta. Two officials confirmed that the American hosts withdrew the plan after European diplomats refused to stand for the image alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The gathering brings together top diplomats from the world's largest economies.

The decision followed a direct refusal by several delegations to join the picture. One US official stated that the photo was cancelled after it became clear some groups were unwilling to participate in a joint shot. The host nation chose to drop the ceremonial event to keep attention on substantive discussions rather than allow the photo opportunity to become a diplomatic distraction.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband attended the meeting in Atlanta. A diplomatic source confirmed the United Kingdom was among the nations that declined to participate. One British official explained that the UK maintains a longstanding policy against direct bilateral engagement with Russian ministers since the invasion of Ukraine. That official added, "we are not about to change that."

Ukraine is not a G20 member but has been invited to similar meetings in recent years. Kyiv did not receive an invitation for this specific session. Relations between Ukraine and the US have been tense this month, marked by a standoff between President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Donald Trump regarding Kyiv's strikes on oil infrastructure inside Russia.

The photo cancellation occurs as US Russia relations appear to have partially thawed. Trump recently waived some sanctions and agreed to a deal to import Russian diesel for the American market. This move aims to lower fuel prices in the US ahead of mid-term elections in November. Trump said suspending several Russian sanctions is an effort to keep Moscow at the negotiating table.

Ukraine and its European allies have heavily criticized the Trump-Putin deal. Zelensky described the arrangement as a gift to Putin that amounts to an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged. Putin stated that Russia is willing to supply both the US and global markets with oil and petroleum products, following a ban on diesel exports introduced earlier this year. Russia currently controls approximately a fifth of Ukrainian territory and has intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks.
