Residents of Charlotte gained 11 additional months of certainty regarding the local data center buildout when the City Council voted Monday to extend the existing moratorium. The pause now runs until October 18, 2027.
The legislative move followed a community event hosted by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Climate Leaders at Patagonia Charlotte in the South End neighborhood. Faith Silva, the group's coordinator, described data centers as the current hot topic for the volunteer organization. She noted that the facilities are frequently in the news and are a primary subject of local conversation.
Approximately 20 attendees participated in the Tuesday evening trivia night. Participants formed teams or played individually. Nundy Silva competed solo under the team name Hey Nunnie Nunnie, a reference to a Renaissance fair act.
The trivia questions covered specific operational and political aspects of the industry. Topics included water consumption, utility rate structures, and local governance. The winners received new outdoor clothing as prizes. Other attendees received information as a consolation.
Silva expressed surprise at the duration of the pause. She stated that she did not realize the moratorium was as long as it currently is. She said that learning the specific end date made her feel hopeful about the timeline.
The extended deadline provides the council and the public with nearly a full year to review data center impacts before the current restrictions lift.
