Electronic Arts has moved to shut down BioWare, a studio it acquired in 2008. A letter to staff confirmed the closure of the Edmonton location. The company also stated it would not move forward with early development on a new Mass Effect title. This decision brings an end to the studio's 31-year run. BioWare produced numerous well-known games over that time. This includes franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The company is redirecting its focus. EA is prioritizing other major projects such as Battlefield, Iron Man, and a Fight Night revival. EA described BioWare as a legendary studio. A small group had been working on the next Mass Effect game. However, EA chose not to continue that development. The studio had been acquired by EA in 2008, and EA went private in August of this year.
The next game in the Mass Effect series was first announced in November 2020. It was teased the following month with an official trailer. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition remaster of the original trilogy was released in 2021. Since then, the studio has been relatively quiet, apart from the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024.
EA provided limited details regarding the closure. The company did not specify how many jobs were affected. It also did not declare the Mass Effect or Dragon Age series as dead. EA offered support to impacted employees. It will assist them in exploring other opportunities within the company. The company has not mentioned BioWare's released games in this context.
The reception of Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have played a role in the decision. EA described the game as engaging only about 1.5 million players during the quarter. This figure was down nearly 50% from the company's expectations. EA did not directly link this performance to the studio's closure. In 2021, BioWare general manager Gary McKay said only a core team was working on the next Mass Effect game.
The move aligns with recent industry trends. Microsoft announced 3,200 Xbox job cuts in July of this year. EA did not reveal any dates for major titles. The company plans to discuss its direction with staff at its Global Town Hall in November. EA is focusing on its core franchises and dropping the studio to refocus.
