Tesla Sets Cybercab Delivery Deadline, Prioritizing Internal Fleet
The company plans to hand over the first units to private customers before 2026 ends, though most will remain in its own robotaxi service.

Tesla is moving to put its steering-wheel-free Cybercab into the hands of private buyers before the year is out, a plan articulated during the company's third-quarter earnings call on October 21. The timeline addresses ongoing speculation about the vehicle's availability for individual purchase. However, the rollout will be tightly controlled. Production is active at Gigafactory Texas, but the immediate focus is on populating Tesla's own internal network.
The timeline for the Cybercab's development began with the start of production in February. The vehicle, a two-seater built without a steering wheel or pedals, relies exclusively on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software. By early September, initial units were deployed into the public-facing Robotaxi service. Tesla has previously stated it aims to sell Cybercabs for approximately $30,000.
During the October 21 call, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy stated, “We’re trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026.” He confirmed that while units are being built, “all of those are currently going to our own internal Robotaxi fleet.” Moravy noted that initial customer deliveries will be limited in volume as the company learns to manage logistics and ownership models for autonomous vehicles operating outside its direct control.
CEO Elon Musk further clarified the business strategy, distinguishing the Cybercab from personal vehicles like the Model 3 or Model Y. “The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service,” Musk said. The company intends to offer the vehicle primarily as a transport-as-a-service offering rather than a personal ownership vehicle.
Looking ahead, the company faces regulatory and technical hurdles. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, indicated that unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities are expected to reach consumer vehicles in Q2 2027. Until then, early buyers or fleet operators may receive Cybercabs whose autonomous operation remains geographically restricted due to regulatory agencies that have not yet approved broader deployment.
