Jorge Posada says the Yankees have not found a place for him in the organization.
Posada, who caught for New York from 1995 through 2011, told the New York Post that he does not believe the club wants him back. "I don't feel welcome when I go there," Posada said. He added that he does not attend spring training because of how he is received. "I don't feel like they want me there, so I don't go," he said. Posada did not identify a specific incident behind his feelings and declined to elaborate further.
The Yankees drafted Posada in the 24th round in 1990, and he spent his entire playing career with the team. Over 17 seasons he hit 275 home runs, drove in 1,065 runs and walked 936 times, compiling a WAR of 42.7. He made five All-Star teams and finished in the top 10 of American League MVP voting twice. New York retired his No. 20 in 2015. Posada, now 56, later worked in the Miami Marlins front office under former Yankees teammate Derek Jeter.
The Yankees were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series earlier this month. The franchise has not won a World Series since 2009, when Posada was still New York's starting catcher.
Posada's comments arrive as the team searches for its next championship. The last time New York won one, he was behind the plate.
