Thunder Eye Reacquisition of Ousmane Dieng and Ty Jerome Amid Injury Plague
With key contributors sidelined, Oklahoma City considers bringing back former players to fill roster gaps before the trade deadline.

Eleven Thunder players logged at least 900 minutes last season, but the current roster is significantly thinner. Injuries have sidelined Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, potentially ending their campaigns, while Alex Caruso manages a sprained ankle. Chet Holmgren missed a recent game against Dallas with right knee patellar tendinitis, and Ajay Mitchell was questionable due to a right ankle sprain.
Only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains from the previous core. This scarcity has intensified speculation about acquisitions. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggested on the Hoop Collective podcast that any new player would likely be a familiar face. This approach prioritizes cultural fit over risk, a known strategy for the franchise.
Several former players are off the table due to league rules. The NBA prohibits reacquiring players traded in the previous offseason, which eliminates Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins. Other alumni are impractical targets. Domantas Sabonis is too expensive, and Kevin Durant is vital to the Houston Rockets. Jerami Grant and James Harden have high salary tags or stylistic mismatches, while Steven Adams has injury concerns.
Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul are complex possibilities. General Manager Sam Presti gave a non-committal response regarding Westbrook. Chris Paul, who had a successful run with Gilgeous-Alexander, is 41 and has shown limited interest in returning after a recent stint with the Clippers.
Victor Oladipo and Al Horford are also in the mix for smaller roles. Oladipo, 34, has not played since the 2022-23 season but fits the defensive culture. Horford is available through trade exceptions, though the Thunder have frontcourt depth. Paul George is a distant possibility requiring a complex trade involving Jalen Williams.
Ousmane Dieng and Ty Jerome are the two most viable candidates. Dieng, drafted ahead of Jalen Williams in 2022, thrived with extra playing time for the Milwaukee Bucks. He is technically eligible for trade after December 15. Ty Jerome, 29, is having a breakout season with the Memphis Grizzlies. His expiring contract makes him an attractive rental, and the decision hinges on whether Memphis views him as a long-term asset.
