The Midland Line between Rolleston and Greymouth is fully closed after a loaded KiwiRail coal train derailed near the Ōtira Tunnel. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Tuesday and left the rail infrastructure with extensive damage.

The train was traveling toward Christchurch when the final wagon left the tracks. The consist stopped inside the tunnel, halting all traffic on the line. No crew members were injured in the accident.

KiwiRail engineering manager Lynne Morton stated that the company is currently assessing the damage and determining the necessary repairs. She said, "We are working to restore the line as quickly and safely as possible."

Service disruptions are already affecting passengers and freight. The TranzAlpine service will operate only as far as Arthur's Pass on Wednesday. KiwiRail expects service effects to continue for the next few days while repairs are completed.

The operator will contact affected passengers directly to offer rebooking or refunds. Replacement buses will be arranged where possible. KiwiRail is also coordinating with freight customers to manage the supply chain disruption.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has launched an inquiry into the event. Chief investigator Louise Cook said a team was appointed to gather evidence while it is available. Investigators will examine the locomotive, rolling stock, and rail infrastructure. They will also secure data, review maintenance records, and interview the train crew and other staff.

Cook said the purpose of the inquiry is to improve transport safety by identifying lessons that could help avoid future accidents. Investigators are expected to spend two to three days on site mapping the scene and examining the wreckage.
