A violent rampage shook the northern outskirts of Paris on Friday, leaving one person dead and five others wounded. French authorities have labeled the incident a terrorist act motivated by racism. The attack targeted working-class communities in Trappes and La Verriere, areas known for their large immigrant and Muslim populations.
The shooting began at 10:30 a.m. local time. The attacker, identified as 39-year-old Kevin T., drove through the neighborhoods for about 15 minutes. He fired an automatic weapon at specific locations, including a petrol station, a medical center, and a children's playground. Police arrested the suspect after a short pursuit. Investigators later found a World War II-era semiautomatic weapon and tear gas grenades inside his vehicle.
The dead man has been named Pengo Bassio Wangi. French media reported that he was young and Black. Among the five injured is a 12-year-old girl of North African descent who was shot eight times. She is currently undergoing surgery at a children's hospital. Her mother stated that the girl was wearing a headscarf and was born in Trappes. Prosecutors announced that three of the five injured victims are in critical condition.
Local politician Laurent Mazaury said the suspect told officers he wanted to kill foreigners. Mazaury described the suspect as a racist. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez called the event a clear terrorist crime. Prosecutors are now investigating whether the suspect conspired with a terrorist group. A member of his immediate family has also been taken into custody. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the case as very serious and said all security resources were mobilized.
President Emmanuel Macron called the event a turning point for the Republic. He stated that France remains determined to fight racism in all forms. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, said the gunman wanted to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots, said the victims could have been his own relatives. He argued that the girl's crime was likely her color.
The girl's mother questioned how anyone could do such a thing to a child. She asked if her daughter was targeted because of her headscarf. She emphasized that the girl has the right to build her life in France. The attack occurred while the country faces cost-of-living and student protests. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday for expected demonstrations.
Political reactions have highlighted existing tensions. Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, condemned the shooting as barbaric. However, Muslim groups accused the right wing of fostering hatred. They pointed to Le Pen's proposal to fine women wearing headscarves in public. The French Muslim Council blamed promoters of anti-Muslim hate speech. Monitors report that anti-Muslim hostility is growing across Europe and the United States. Recent data shows a significant rise in hate crimes and discrimination against Muslims in these regions.
