The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has allocated $1,761,780 to replace a aging bridge on Niantic Road in Douglass Township, Montgomery County. The funds will pay for a new 70-foot, single-span structure to carry traffic over the western branch of Perkiomen Creek. This new design will feature two 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders, matching the horizontal alignment of the current bridge.
Rep. Donna Scheuren, R-147th Dist., announced the award to Column Construction Inc. of Glenmoore, Chester County. The project extends beyond the bridge deck to include the reconstruction of approximately 334 feet of approach roadway and the replacement of guardrails. This work crosses a county line, reaching into Washington Township in Berks County.
The existing structure, built in 1931, is a double-span bridge measuring 58 feet in length. It currently carries a posted weight restriction of 31 tons for single vehicles and 40 tons for combined vehicles. Scheuren described the project as a necessary upgrade for a bridge that has served the community for nearly a century. She stated that the new structure will improve safety and enhance the reliability of this roadway connection between Montgomery and Berks counties.
Drivers will need to adjust their routes while construction takes place. PennDOT plans to direct motorists onto Hoffmansville Road, also known as Route 100, and Congo-Niantic Road. Commuters should expect additional travel time during the project window.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026. Physical completion is anticipated for late 2027 or early 2028. The contract award marks the final step before physical work begins on this long-planned infrastructure update.
