The Gators faced their most dangerous threat to an NCAA record in almost four decades on Saturday in Atlanta. Against Georgia, Florida risked ending a scoring streak of 481 games, a lead of 54 games over the next best team, TCU. The margin for error vanished in the fourth quarter when the Gators fell behind 27-8.

Tramell Jones Jr. managed the final drive with precision. He completed a 23-yard pass to tight end Luke Harpring on fourth and nine. Later, at the four-yard line, receiver Dallas Wilson drew a pass interference penalty to secure a fresh set of downs. Jones then kept the ball for a touchdown with 6:59 remaining. The score kept the relocated Cocktail Party celebration from turning into a shutout party for the Bulldogs.

This streak represents the longest in major college football history. The last time Florida failed to score was on October 29, 1988, when Auburn dominated the Gators 16-0 in Gainesville. On that day, star running back Emmitt Smith watched from the sideline with a knee injury as the Tigers held Florida to just 116 total yards.

Since that loss, Florida has scored in every one of its 37 full seasons. The streak spans the coaching eras of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, as well as the playing career of Tim Tebow. It began the following week with a 44-yard field goal by John David Francis against Georgia.

The record has survived multiple near misses, particularly since Meyer left the program. In 2022, Florida trailed Oregon State 30-3 in the Las Vegas Bowl before Adam Mihalek kicked a 40-yard field goal with 37 seconds left. Two years earlier, Georgia beat Florida 34-7, with the Gators scoring only on a two-yard run by backup Emory Jones in the final minutes.

Earlier close calls include a 2015 loss to Florida State, where a safety provided the only points for a team that trailed 13-0 in the fourth quarter. In 2011, Florida also avoided a shutout against Florida State by scoring late after fumble recoveries and penalties. Even in the early days of the streak, offenses struggled to find rhythm, such as when Florida lost 31-3 to Alabama in 2005 and 45-3 to Tennessee in 1990.

The streak now stands at 481 games. The Gators enter the remainder of the season with the potential to reach 486 consecutive scores by the end of the year, maintaining their place at the top of the all-time list.
