Carter Corrigan of Jackson High School secured the District 1/2 4A boys cross country championship on Saturday with a 15:27.3 finish. The sophomore pulled away from Skyline senior Yashveer Brar during the final curve of the track at Lakewood High School in Arlington. The two runners remained level entering the final stretch, but Corrigan created a gap as he rounded the bend. He repeated his strategy from the Wesco Championships one week earlier, where he also outkicked his opponent for the win.
Corrigan entered the final 250 meters with a similar position to his previous race. He noted that Brar did not appear to be saving his speed for the late race. Corrigan decided to use his kick at that moment to secure the lead. The front pack started the race faster than expected, forcing Corrigan to cover more ground in the middle miles. Once the runners reached the two-mile mark, Corrigan and Brar began to distance themselves from the field.
Jackson assistant coach Marc Dugenet credited Corrigan’s decision to stay with the lead group during the first mile. The coaching staff trusted Corrigan’s ability to finish strong, so maintaining a position to strike late was essential. Dugenet described Corrigan as a gamer who prepares specifically for big meets. He said the runner executed his plan, which had succeeded the previous week.
Corrigan improved his time from last year’s district race, where he finished 53rd in 17:17.7. That previous performance followed a freshman season plagued by illness and injury, during which he ran a 15:48.3 time just one month before districts. Since then, Corrigan focused on daily training, recovery, and maintaining health. He attributed his progress to consistency and avoiding laziness in his preparation.
Jackson placed fourth as a team, earning one of the five available spots for the 4A State Championships. Junior Logan Rusher finished 16th in 16:01.5, and junior Asher Yochum placed 23rd in 16:09.6. Both runners would have qualified individually if the team had not secured a spot. Senior Jordan Schatz finished 54th in 16:46.0, and freshman Maximiliano Rosas placed 58th in 16:48.7. The team will head to Pasco next week for the state meet.
Corrigan expects a loaded field at the state championships. He does not anticipate winning but aims to podium. He plans to use the same strategy he employed in his last two races, sticking with a strong group to position himself for a late finish.
