Nikki Porcher will lead Georgia's labor department.
The Democrat defeated Bárbara Rivera Holmes on Tuesday night. Rivera Holmes held the seat after Gov. Brian Kemp appointed her to the post. The 2026 midterm contest ended her tenure in the role. Porcher served in the U.S. Air Force before working as an educator. She described herself as a community advocate during the campaign.
Porcher ran on a platform to update the agency. She promised to simplify unemployment services. She aimed to expand job training programs across all 159 counties in the state.
The new commissioner inherits specific duties for the department. The office administers unemployment insurance benefits. It provides workforce solutions for employers. The agency also connects job seekers with local employment opportunities. These functions remain central to the office Porcher now holds.
Porcher takes the helm after a competitive race. The result shifts control of the labor office to the Democratic Party. Rivera Holmes sought a full elected term but lost to Porcher. The change in leadership follows the November 3 election results.
