William Contreras was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in the fifth game to secure the championship. Contreras is the eighth catcher in history to receive this specific award.

During the five-game series, the 28-year-old veteran batted .381. He also threw out four base runners and successfully appealed 10 of 13 challenges under the automated ball-strike system. In the final game, he hit a two-run double that contributed to the Brewers victory. Manager Pat Murphy described Contreras as a pit bull, noting that while he may bite, he is special to the team.

Contreras joined Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela as players who won both the World Baseball Classic and the World Series in the same calendar year. Venezuela won its first World Baseball Classic title in March. Contreras cited this dual achievement as historic for his home country. He also mentioned his older brother, Willson Contreras, who won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, as a personal role model.

The Brewers finished the regular season with a .270 team batting average led by Contreras, who recorded 18 home runs and a career-high 94 runs batted in. The team won its fourth consecutive National League Central division title. Contreras led all major league catchers in challenges filed during the regular season with 185 attempts and 105 successful reversals. He attributed his success with the new system to daily experience rather than magic.

Other candidates for the award included shortstop Cooper Pratt, who set a single-game hit record and tied a rookie record for runs batted in. Outfielder Jackson Chourio recorded 11 hits, the most by any player in a five-game series. Starter Jacob Misiorowski pitched two wins and one loss, allowing only one run over 10.2 innings. Reliever Aaron Ashby pitched 5.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and one save.

In Miami-Dade County, a separate incident occurred on Wednesday night in the 17000 block of Northeast 14th Avenue. The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office reported that a man fatally shot a woman and then took his own life. Authorities stated the victim had entered the residence to collect personal items before the shooting took place. Investigators are currently gathering information at the scene.

The county is also addressing a housing shortage estimated at more than 100,000 affordable units. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated that her administration has completed 34,000 affordable units and is working toward 50,000. Annie Lord, executive director of Miami Homes for All, emphasized the need for more housing for working families. A new alliance of 40 financial and public institutions aims to expedite funding for these projects.

Local organization Touching Miami with Love plans to build 100 affordable apartments in Homestead as part of a $53 million project expected to begin in 2027. The goal is to ensure families do not spend more than 60 percent of their income on rent. Additionally, the county has permitted accessory dwelling units in certain unincorporated areas to increase rental options.
