Barcelona will host Real Madrid on Sunday for a La Liga match that carries rare statistical weight. The two clubs are currently tied with 106 wins each in their head-to-head history, meaning a victory on Sunday would grant the winner the exclusive lead in a rivalry that began in 1902.
The fixture, known as El Clasico, has featured some of football's most recognizable players over the last century. Past matches included Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside names such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Current squads center on Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, while Real Madrid fields Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr.
One of the most memorable recent encounters occurred at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 23, 2017. Barcelona won 3-2 in a dramatic La Liga clash. Casemiro gave Real Madrid an early lead, but Messi equalized within five minutes. Ivan Rakitic put Barcelona ahead after halftime, and Sergio Ramos was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Messi. James Rodriguez tied the score in the 85th minute, but Messi scored in the final minute to reach his 500th career goal for the club.
In a different tactical battle on March 10, 2007, a 19-year-old Messi scored his first career hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou. Barcelona was reduced to ten men during the match, yet Messi secured a point with a goal in the first minute of stoppage time. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, with Sergio Ramos adding a third. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, with Real Madrid claiming the title on head-to-head record.
Real Madrid dominated a 4-2 home win on April 10, 2005, showcasing their Galacticos squad under president Florentino Perez. Zinedine Zidane scored early, Ronaldo Nazario extended the lead, and Raul added a third goal. Michael Owen scored the winner in the 65th minute. Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho scored for Barcelona, but Real Madrid held their advantage. Barcelona went on to win the league that season by three points.
The largest margin of victory in recent memory came on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Gonzalo Higuain gave the hosts a 14th-minute lead, but Thierry Henry equalized four minutes later and added a second goal. Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also scored. Sergio Ramos added a second-half goal for Real Madrid, but Barcelona won the league that season by nine points.
The rivalry has also decided major trophies, such as the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011. Real Madrid won 1-0 in extra time after a goalless first 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the victory. Di Maria was sent off for a second yellow card later in the game, but the goal remained standing. That win was Real Madrid's first domestic cup since 1993 and their first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho.
