The mountain retreat known as the Eagle's Nest is being rebuilt after a fire consumed the historic structure on the Bavarian Alps.
The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 as a temporary seat of government for Adolf Hitler. It survived Allied bombing during World War II and remained largely in its original condition for decades. The building later became a tourist site and operated as a restaurant and beer garden.
On Friday at approximately 9:15 p.m., emergency services received an alert about a fire at the site, which sits at an elevation of 6,017 feet. Firefighters arrived to find the building completely engulfed in flames. Authorities noted that local conditions made it difficult to move fire trucks to the location. No one was found inside the structure, and no injuries were reported.
Police quickly identified a suspect in the incident. Prosecutors stated that the individual is a 33-year-old German citizen with ties to the Berchtesgaden area, though he does not currently live there. He has been questioned and showed signs of mental illness, leading to his transfer to a psychiatric facility. Investigators are also examining whether a political motive drove the act, given the building's history. Officials said there were no current indications that anyone else was involved.
Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told reporters in Berchtesgaden that the site will not be left as a ruin. He said the future appearance of the building will be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. Herrmann stated, 'I think we will be able to find a sensible solution.'
The minister emphasized the importance of continuing the work of remembrance associated with the site. The Eagle's Nest website previously described the building as one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hitler era that stands for the insanity of the regime. The criminal investigation into the cause of the fire remains open.
