Nicolas Jackson scored twice to lead Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Villa Park on Saturday. The result ended Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season, a run that had seen them win their first seven matches under manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca had previously become the first manager in Premier League history to win his opening seven games in charge of a new club. However, the visitors struggled to find a solution against a rebuilt Villa side. Manchester City have now lost at this stadium in each of the last four seasons.

Aston Villa took an early lead in the sixth minute. Marc Guehi made a heavy touch that allowed Jackson to gain possession. He cut inside defender Elliott Anderson and blasted a high shot past Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. City controlled possession for much of the first half but were repeatedly stopped by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Suzuki denied efforts from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post during that period. The pressure finally broke through in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Ndiaye to level the score. This goal marked Haaland's 13th tally in his first 10 appearances this season.

Josko Gvardiol had a chance to put City ahead moments later, but Suzuki directed his powerful drive onto the crossbar. Villa restored their lead at the 60-minute mark. Ibrahim Mbaye moved behind the City defense and crossed for Jackson, who placed a low shot past Donnarumma. City pushed for an equalizer in the final minutes but could not find a way past the Villa defense.

The win moves Aston Villa to sixth place in the league standings. It marks their sixth victory in seven matches across all competitions. The result also offers Arsenal a chance to level Manchester City at the top of the table if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday.

Unai Emery, who has managed Villa for four years, has rebuilt the squad after losing six starters from last season's Europa League-winning team. New summer signings Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are contributing to the team's recent success. Manchester City, the 10-time English champions, are currently appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges related to financial rule violations between 2009 and 2018.
