Fifteen local musicians will perform at the Thomas Center in Gainesville on Sunday, November 8, presenting a concert that contains no pre-written compositions. The event, titled Musicians Without a Net, begins at 4 p.m. and offers free admission to the public. Organizer Cindy Mueller is hosting the gathering, which features both professional artists and community members from across the city.

The performance structure differs from standard jazz or folk improvisation. Musicians do not start with a predetermined key, harmony, or rhythm. Instead, they begin without a fixed musical style. Each piece develops sound by sound as the players listen to one another. The group relies on trust and imagination to build the music from scratch.

The ensemble consists of keyboard, string, wind, and percussion players working in duos and trios. A separate vocal group of seven singers improvises together. The resulting audio may incorporate elements of blues, folk, jazz, pop, and global music. The mood shifts between playful, calm, simple, and complex tones during the afternoon.

Mueller notes that the music invites audiences into a shared journey of discovery. Every piece is unrehearsed and unique to the specific moment of performance. The event welcomes both musicians and non-musicians, requiring no prior familiarity with improvised music. The program aims to provide an afternoon of spontaneous creativity and connection for the Gainesville community.

The Thomas Center is located at 302 NE Sixth Ave. The free event serves as a platform for local artists to collaborate in real time. Listeners can expect a variety of sounds, including intriguing rhythms and unexpected mixes. The concert operates as a spontaneous gathering where the final product is entirely determined by the musicians in the room at that hour.
