A 36-year-old British woman has died in the Bahamas after being pulled from the sea while trying to save her two sons from a dangerous current. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that the incident occurred on the island of Bimini, where officers have opened an investigation into the sudden death.
The woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was snorkelling with her husband and their two children near the southern point of the island when the water conditions turned hazardous. According to police reports, a strong current quickly swept both boys away. The mother attempted to reach her children but was also carried off by the force of the water.
The two boys were successfully rescued from the sea. The woman was also pulled from the water and brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock. At the location, bystanders reportedly began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to help revive her.
Shortly after 10:00 am on Tuesday, officers at the Alice Town police station received a report that a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and learned that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for urgent medical care. Despite the efforts of the medical team, a doctor at the facility pronounced her dead.
In a preliminary statement released on social media, the police force outlined the sequence of events leading to her hospitalization. The statement emphasized that the initial rescue efforts at the dock included CPR before she was moved to the clinic.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force indicated that foul play is not suspected in the case at this time. To determine the precise cause of death, an autopsy will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The UK Foreign Office has acknowledged the loss of the British national. A spokesperson stated that officials are in direct contact with local authorities in the Bahamas to coordinate support. The department added that its thoughts are with the family of the woman who has died.
The Foreign Office confirmed that it is providing consular support to the family during this difficult period. The investigation remains active as officials work to finalize the details of the rescue and the subsequent medical response.
The incident highlights the risks associated with strong currents in the waters surrounding Bimini. While the two sons were saved, the tragic loss of their mother has prompted a formal review of the circumstances by local law enforcement.
