Michael Ferguson defeated Republican Yoni Anijar on Tuesday to become the first Democrat in nearly five decades to represent Florida House District 100. The victory breaks a long streak of Republican control in the Broward County seat, which was left open after state Rep. Chip LaMarca reached the end of his term.

Ferguson, a U.S. Air Force veteran raised in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, cited his military background and local ties as the foundation for his campaign. He focused his platform on three main issues: reducing the cost of living, stabilizing property insurance premiums, and protecting coastal areas from environmental threats.

"Tonight, we made history. For the first time in nearly 50 years, voters in our district have elected a Democrat to represent them in the Florida House," Ferguson said in a statement. He noted that rising costs have made it difficult for families to manage finances, for young adults to settle down, and for seniors to remain in their long-time neighborhoods.

The candidate emphasized that his legislative agenda is designed to serve all constituents regardless of party affiliation. Ferguson stated that his service taught him to lead with integrity and put others first, arguing that local challenges do not follow partisan lines.

He pledged to work in Tallahassee to lower property insurance premiums and make daily life more affordable. Ferguson said he intends to fight for the specific neighborhoods and coastlines that define the community's character, promising to bridge the gap between local needs and state policy.
