Matthew Bianchini admitted defeat in the Pemberton Township mayoral race on Wednesday, ending his tenure as the Republican leader of the New Jersey municipality.

Bianchini posted a message on Facebook congratulating his opponent, Democrat Belinda Fontanez, on her victory. He stated that the township's success matters more than any single election and pledged his full support for a smooth transition. Unofficial results show Bianchini received just over 30 percent of the vote, marking a decisive loss for the incumbent.

The election loss follows a widely viewed incident at an October council meeting where Bianchini physically charged toward resident Michael Sawka. Video footage shows the mayor being restrained by another person as he moved toward Sawka. Bianchini can be heard yelling, "I am f, in' gettin' you!" during the confrontation. He later told WPVI that he "basically snapped" and admitted the moment was "wrong," though he maintained he would do it again if necessary.

The dispute stems from a long-standing conflict between the mayor and the resident. Bianchini alleged that Sawka had been verbally abusive toward his wife and daughter during the meeting. He claimed that after hearing the comments, Sawka made a hand gesture toward his daughter and then smiled at him while repeating the gesture. Bianchini told the Pine Barrens Tribune that this sequence of events triggered his reaction. Sawka denied targeting the mayor's family, stating that he was only trying to demonstrate that the town was wasting money. He added that the mayor's family members have frequently attacked him online with personal critiques.

Bianchini will remain in office until the end of the year after stepping into the role following his predecessor's resignation. His wife, who was in the audience during the October meeting, commented on social media that she understood his protective instinct as a parent and spouse, even if she did not condone the physical action. The new administration will now prepare to take over the township's leadership in the coming months.
