Kylian Mbappe: 22 World Cup goals anchor trophyless Ballon d'Or bid
The Real Madrid forward seeks to become the first player since 2013 to win the award without a major team trophy, relying on individual records after a season without silverware.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as a record holder rather than a favorite. Bookmakers do not list him as the top contender, and he did not finish as the top scorer in every competition last season. He has spent the past month actively promoting his individual case, hoping that statistical dominance will outweigh the lack of team trophies.
The 2025-26 campaign concluded without Mbappe winning a single trophy at either the club or international level. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated from the Champions League quarterfinals by Bayern Munich. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match. This marks the second consecutive season the Real Madrid forward has gone without major silverware.
His primary argument rests on the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second time in a row and became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe told reporters last month that overtaking these legends in the sport's most important tournament is what defines his candidacy. When asked who he was voting for, he replied, "Myself."
Club performance also supports his bid. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring charts with 15. He described the year as one where he was the top scorer in all major competitions. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho backed his player, stating, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team."
The main weakness in his campaign is the absence of team success. Rival candidates have stronger trophy hauls. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. Mbappe argues that individual performance matters more for this specific award. He told radio station RFI, "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player."
Historical precedent favors players with team trophies. Every Ballon d'Or winner in the past decade lifted at least one major trophy. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 award after helping PSG win the Champions League. Rodri won the award in 2024 after winning Euro 2024 and the Premier League with Manchester City.
One exception exists. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 without a major team trophy. That season, he scored 66 goals for club and country while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo ended Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak with that victory.
Mbappe has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or nine times. His best previous finish was third place in 2023. The award carries no cash prize but increases a player's market value and status. The ceremony takes place in London on Monday.
